No News is Good News...Right?

It's been over a month since David Lynch announced that he was no longer going to direct the new episodes of Twin Peaks in 2016. He said a low budget was offered by Showtime and he feels he can't do the project the right way. Ever since the Twin Peaks nation has feverishly and relentlessly pleaded for a resolution. The actors and fans have banded together on social media and continuously lobbied for both Showtime and David Lynch to find a way to make it work.

So far the only ray of hope was offered by Dana Ashbrook who said there is a fifty fifty chance that David will change his mind. Otherwise all is quiet on the Showtime front. Ironically Showtime felt comfortable charging $100 for people to watch the Mayweather/Pacquiao fight on pay per view, but doesn't have enough money to offer Twin Peaks a bigger budget. Regardless Frost and Lynch spend a year and a half putting this deal together so I have to believe money was discussed at some point.

Mark Frost has been silent on the issue. I'm sure that is by design either out of respect for David or because Showtime has him on contract or both. Same with Kyle Maclachlan and likely for the same reasons. Mark was also writing a book called The Secret Lives of Twin Peaks, which is due out this fall, but I wonder if this glitch will delay that as well. So it seems that we are stuck in limbo right now. Twin Peaks fans want David Lynch to direct and Mark at the writing helm. Daily hashtags such as #NoLynchNoPeaks #SaveTwinPeaks #NoFrostNoPeaks are dominating all Twin Peaks related social media. It appears that fans won't accept anything but the best and why should we?

Fans know Twin Peaks got jerked around terribly by ABC when it originally aired. We've all hit that cluster of Season 2 episodes when the quality just dips. Despite many humorous moments and a love for the show and it's characters, the poor storylines are undeniable. Could another director do what Lynch does...no! Twin Peaks at it's best is art. David Lynch has a unique style that can't be duplicated, but would you tolerate a Mark Frost directed Twin Peaks?

I might (Don't shoot me!) because many of the episodes weren't directed by David in the original series and were still terrific. However it's undeniable that the episodes David did direct were in many ways and for many reasons the best of the series. I think, despite my own selfish desire to return to the world of Twin Peaks, it might be best if it doesn't return without Lynch directing every episode. What's the point if it doesn't kick serious ass? Sigh. 


"If life could only be like those summers up at Pearl Lakes?"  Its hard being a Twin Peaks fan and it always was. Finger's crossed that the show can be saved and maybe, just maybe us devoted fans will get the show returned the way it truly should be. I'm hopeful that Lynch & Frost want to find a way to make it happen, but the natural skeptic in me is a little worried that it might have all been just a beautiful dream. Either way I will always love Twin Peaks. It captured a part of my soul in it's wonderful world in 1990 and has kept me trapped between Douglas firs and Sycamores trees ever since!

Twin Peaks Returns (Part 8): A Message to the World

July 16, 1945, White Sands, New Mexico, 5:39 (MWT) 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1...FLASH! Insert a bit of Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima , and slowly zoom in. The atmosphere isn't natural, nor is it comforting. It's a black and white landscape, like the Lodges themselves, and full of ominousness. A mushroom cloud emerges. This is reality mixed with fiction. This is the most iconic and deadly imagery of all true life horror. The worst of our fears; atomic destruction; nuclear fallout; the end of all things. As we enter the explosion, with its colors popping off like fireworks, angry bursts of atoms fracturing physics, poisoning the earth, and raging with wild fire, it begins to become apparent; this isn't just about Twin Peaks, this is a message to the world. The Load on Toad

With so many irreverent side characters in Twin Peaks, it's hard to choose a favorite, but for whatever reason Toad has always been high on my list. After I recently recapped Episode 8 , I got thinking about Toad and the tribute to Kevin Young Jr. at the end of the episode. So, I did a little Google research and found out a few tidbits about the actor Kevin Young. He was originally hired to work as a production assistant on the Twin Peaks set and ended up being cast as the Double R lovin' extra known only as, Toad. Kevin Young's  IMDB page lists him in 4 uncredited episodes and as being a production assistant on the set of Fire Walk With Me. However many fans credit him with being a fun add on to our love of pie, coffee, bad tips, Shelly, Norma and all things Double R related.
