No News is Good News...Right?

Shhh, I'm on contract! "Everyone is on the internet but they're not all talking with each other. There are groups upon groups out there, but they don't talk to one another. So while the internet brings everyone into a shared space, it does not necessarily bring them together." David Lynch It's been over a month since David Lynch announced that he was no longer going to direct the new episodes of Twin Peaks in 2016. He said a low budget was offered by Showtime and he feels he can't do the project the right way. Ever since the Twin Peaks nation has feverishly and relentlessly pleaded for a resolution. The actors and fans have banded together on social media and continuously lobbied for both Showtime and David Lynch to find a way to make it work. So far the only ray of hope was offered by Dana Ashbrook who said there is a fifty fifty chance that David will change his mind. Otherwise all is quiet on the Showtime front. Ironically Showtime f...

25 Years Later - Happy Anniversary Twin Peaks!

Image
On Sunday April 8th 1990 Twin Peaks debuted and forever changed the way TV was made. I was very young, but I can still remember sitting in my bedroom glued to the television and feeling completely entranced by what I was seeing. Thinking of it brings one of my favorite Hunter S. Thompson quotes to mind from Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas, "We had all the momentum; we were riding the crest of a high and beautiful wave. So now, you can go up on a steep hill in Las Vegas and look West, and with the right kind of eyes you can almost see the high-water mark - that place where the wave finally broke and rolled back." Hunter was referring to the high of social and political changes in the 1960's, but I relate it to Twin Peaks because I remember TV of that time being so vanilla and formulaic. Shows like Murder She Wrote and Cagney and Lacey ruled our screens. TV movies of the week, often fluffy and righteous, were supposed to entertain us. Talk shows and soap operas d...

The Horne family enjoys a silent dinner when Jerry arrives with baguette sandwiches for Ben to try. Ben takes a enticing sniff, then a bite and then another until he's stuffing his face. The Owls Are Not What They Seem

Image
What Are They? Here's What We Know: Usually if it looks like an owl, you'd think it's an owl, but in the case of Twin Peaks there was clearly more to the story. In fact, throughout the series there were so many references to the owls that I think it's fair to say this would have been delved into further had the series lived on. So perhaps in 2017 we'll get more confirmation on what the owls actually represent. Either way all we really know is that they always seem to appear when something is about to happen in Twin Peaks. Is it interesting to note that owls typically represent death in Native American mythology. See here for more information:  Owl Myths My Theory: Personally I have always felt that the owls served as a vehicle for the spirits from the white and black lodges to use as a means of travel to go to and from the lodges and the real world. It always seemed that Bob needed a host to cause his particular brand of trouble and couldn't surv...

Review of The Missing Pieces

Image
Don't take the ring, Laura! The Missing Pieces First let me start by saying that if you don't have the The Missing Pieces Blu-Ray set it's well worth the price. It's a beautiful set for Twin Peaks fans. I actually just purchased it and watched the entire Missing Pieces footage. After having watched I feel like, perhaps foolishly so, I have a clearer understanding of Laura Palmer. Being a long time fan, sometimes I forget that the beauty of Twin Peaks was that every time I rewatch the series and the movie there is always something new I take away from it. After seeing all the footage, which I think was put together wonderfully by David Lynch, it left me feeling a bit sad. I'm not ashamed to say that parts of the show always make me cry. The movie in particular was always very intense and emotional to me. As I stated in a previous post,  My Love Affair with Twin Peaks , I had the pleasure of seeing Fire Walk With Me in the theater. I would deem it "an ...

Who really pulled the trigger on JFK? Season 1 Episode 1 Written by: Mark Frost &  David Lynch Directed by: Duwayne Dunham Original Air Date: April 12, 1990 "Freshly Squeezed" At the Great Northern, Dale talks to Diane while hanging upside down using his special boots in his hotel room. He asks Diane what really went on between Marilyn Monroe and the Kennedy's and who really pulled the trigger on JFK? Dale remarks on the wonderful coffee in the dining room at the Great Northern. He tells the waitress he'll have grapefruit as long as their freshly squeezed while he watches Audrey stroll in. Audrey sits down and tells Dale that Laura tutored her brother Johnny. Then she notes that sometimes she gets so flushed and oddly asks if Dale's  palms ever itch. "Harry I really have to urinate!" Dale makes his way to the police station and finds everyone eating donuts. He runs down his plan of action for the morning an...

Decoding Margaret Lanterman

Image
I do not "introduce" the log! Let's take a moment to discuss one of Twin Peaks most irreverent character's. Played by the very talented Catherine E. Coulson , Margaret Lanterman aka The Log Lady often stole every scene she was in with her impeccable timing and somewhat uncomfortable presence. She seems to have insight about a lot of Twin Peaks secrets, yet is dependent on her log for companionship and the psychic knowledge it provides. Hawk once said, "The wood holds many spirits, doesn't it Margaret?" With that in mind, you'd have to wonder if the log was in fact enchanted in someway. Or was it simply a representation of those who Margaret lost? Here's what we know about the Log Lady. She was married briefly, but her husband "met the devil" (possibly Bob) on their wedding night and died in a mysterious fire. She lives in an isolated cabin in the woods and her log saw something the night Laura Palmer was killed.  I think it...
